Scoliosis

ScoliosisScoliosis

Overview

Scoliosis is an abnormal sideways curvature of the spine that often develops during late childhood or adolescence, just before puberty. While it may not cause pain initially, untreated scoliosis can lead to noticeable changes in posture, discomfort, and in severe cases, breathing difficulties.

Causes & Risk Factors

The exact cause is often unknown, but genetics can play a role, as it tends to run in families. It may also result from neuromuscular conditions, birth defects, or spinal injuries.

Symptoms

Signs of scoliosis include uneven shoulders, hips, or a prominent shoulder blade. The spine may curve into a "C" or "S" shape, and in advanced cases, it can twist, causing back pain or limiting lung capacity.

Treatments

At Kentucky Pain Institute & Spurlock Chiropractic Centre, we provide non-invasive treatments to improve spinal function and relieve symptoms of scoliosis:

  • Chiropractic Care: Enhances spinal mobility and reduces tension in affected areas.
  • Therapeutic Exercises: Strengthens muscles to support the spine and improve posture.
  • Spinal Bracing: Helps prevent further curvature, especially in younger patients.
  • Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression Therapy: Relieves pressure on the spine and nerves, reducing associated discomfort.
  • Dry Needling: Releases muscle tightness and improves range of motion.
  • Interventional Pain Management: Includes targeted injections to alleviate inflammation and nerve pain.

Understanding Treatment Goals

Think of scoliosis like a rusty door hinge. The hinge may squeak and strain when it moves, but when you apply WD-40, it functions more smoothly, even though it still looks rusty. Similarly, with adult scoliosis (where growth plates are already fused), treatments like chiropractic care and exercises can significantly improve spinal function and reduce pain, but the curvature seen on an X-ray is unlikely to change. The focus is on improving how you feel and move, rather than altering the structural appearance of the spine.

At-Home Scoliosis Screening Tips

Parents can screen for scoliosis by observing their child:

  1. Posture Check: Look for uneven shoulders, hips, or shoulder blades.
  2. Bend Test: Have the child bend forward, arms relaxed, and check for rib or spinal unevenness.
  3. Symmetry Check: Note if one side of the body appears higher or more pronounced.

If you detect any abnormalities, early intervention is key. Contact us for a professional evaluation and a tailored care plan to help manage scoliosis effectively.

I walked out of the clinic feeling better than when I walked in today. I couldn’t recommend Dr. Matt Barnhart and KPI more highly. Dr. Matt has always taken the time to explain the physiology of what’s happening when I am feeling pain and has been an outstanding resource for helping me build a consistent mobility routine.

My family and I have been going to Dr Matt for over two years and he’s treated us with love and kindness as well as professionalism since day one! While I was pregnant, he treated me monthly, sometimes weekly and I believe that played a huge role in the natural birth I was able to accomplish!

What a wonderful staff! Very thorough and they took the time to really explain the results of my xrays instead of just throwing a bunch of words at me. They also offered a range of options as to how to proceed to further treat my issues.

What is Dry Needling, and How Does it Work?

Dry Needling Treatment

Dry needling uses thin needles to target trigger points in muscles, relieving tension, reducing pain, and improving mobility. It’s often used to treat conditions like muscle tightness, sports injuries, and tension headaches.

How is Dry Needling Different from Acupuncture?

Dry needling focuses on relieving muscle tension and pain by targeting trigger points, based on modern Western medicine. Acupuncture, rooted in traditional Chinese medicine, aims to balance energy flow by stimulating specific points along the body. While both involve the use of thin needles, they differ in purpose and methodology.
